Built between 1946 and 1952, Agua Azul is a public park administered by the Metropolitan Agency of Urban Forests of the Metropolitan Area of ​​Guadalajara (AMBU). Initially used as a place of recreation for the families of Guadalajara, who were allowed to ride in carriages or on horseback through its interior streets or enjoy a boat ride. The park was used in different ways, from a place for the fun and relaxation of those who visited it, even with activities of a social nature.

Since in 1890 public laundries were installed inside, which were very useful for the lower strata of society. Later it was transformed into a Zoological Park and it hosted the October Festivities for many years. As of 1992 it was reopened as the Center for Environmental Culture.

This urban forest is a space for natural life in the heart of the state capital, with gardens that invites to spend a picnic surrounded by nature and perform recreational, educational, and cultural activities. It has 1,465 trees of different species. The park has specialized educational spaces, such as its Butterfly House, Aviary House, pyramid-shaped Orchid Garden, the acoustic shell, the Garden of Art and the Calzada de los Músicos, all of them with a unique architectural work.

In addition, it helps to protect Mexico ’s species which are in danger of extinction. There is a reproduction clinic which has a controlled tropical-humid climate all the time and orchids from the region are exhibited. Year after year, exhibitions are held during the months of March and October, in which orchidology associations from all over the country participate.
