Hospicio Cabañas

The Cabañas Hospicio owes its name to Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo, who arrived in Mexico in 1796 with the purpose of building a shelter for orphaned children, the elderly and homeless. Due to its neoclassical architecture, the Hospicio Cabañas is one of the most significant and emblematic buildings in Jalisco and Mexico. The most important political and social events of the 19th and 20th centuries have been recorded here.

In 1810 the building opened its doors as „House of Charity and Mercy“. It has a symmetrical floor plan, divided by the cross of its Main Chapel. In the course of time, it went from an orphanage to a barracks during the War of Independence, in the mid-19th century, the hospital lasted well into the 20th century and continued to function until 1980.
