Let's get started
Lake Chapala is nestled in a 5,000 ft valley in the middle of the Sierrra Madre Mountains, in Jalisco, and Michoacán. It was formed in the late Pleistocene era approximately 38,000 years ago. According to November 2009 report, the area of the lake is 114,659 hectares with an average depth of 8 m, corresponding to a volume of about 5,500 million cubic metres, or about 68 % of capacity.
It has three islands, Isla de los Alacranes (Scorpion Island), Isla de Mezcala (Mezcala Island), and a third very small island next to Isla Mezcala called La Isla Menor. The principal source of Lake Chapala is the Lerma River, which originates near Toluca in Mexico State.
