Isla de Mezcala

Isla de Mezcala is in Lake Chapala, in front of the town of Mezcala de la Asunción in Jalisco. It is home to the Coca People. It is the largest island in Lake Chapala, featuring an old Spanish fort and an old Mexican prison. It is the only work of military architecture in the territory of Jalisco. Currently it can be classified as an archaeological island since it preserves a testimony of what happened since pre-Columbian times.

Task: Isla de Mezcala

During the Mexican War of Independence, 1500 Mexican patriots holed up here and fought off the Spanish from 1812 until 1816. After hunger and sickness forced the rebels to surrender, the Spanish took over the island and built Fuertes Mezcala (Mezcala Fort) here. When Mexico won the war five year later, it was turned into a prison, which operated until 1855. Now, more than 160 years later, exploring the ruins makes for a fascinating couple of hours.

Some of the attraction of Isla de Mezcala includes ‘’The Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos’’, ‘’The Chapel’’, ‘’The Strong’’ and quadrangular shaped ‘’The old barracks’’.
