Ankara, formerly known as Angora, sits in the country’s central Anatolia region. Ankara was declared the capital of Turkey in 1923. It lies about 125 miles (200 km) south of the Black Sea. It’s a centre for the performing arts, home to the State Opera and Ballet, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, and several national theatre companies. It is about 24.520 km² area and has 5.663 million population (2020).
