Barekese Dam
Barekese Dam is a dam on the Ofin River that supports the main water treatment plant for Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, supplying about 80 percent of the potable water for the city and its surrounding environs. During the Nkrumah regime, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah the then president of Ghana contracted Dammon Construction Company to build the barekese dam for hydroelectric power generation to provide electricity for the Ashanti region and its neighboring towns.
It was started in 1965, and completed in June 1969 with an estimated cost of 8.5 million cedis. The dam was constructed on the river Ofin at a height of 725 feet to its spillways.
