The Sanctuario of the Lord of La Piedad was built in 1741 to 1750.  It is a majestic construction in Plateresque style of the eighteenth century, located in the historic center of the city of La Piedad Michoacán. It owes its name to the miraculous image of Jesus crucified that is called “Señor de La Piedad” .

The church is dedicated to the Lord of La Piedad. It holds the title of being the church with the largest dome in Mexico. While restoring the church tower, bullet and cannon perforations were found which were probably remaining from the time of the Mexican Revolution. In addition to the remarkable architecture, the reconstruction of bell tower has been finished and a night lighting system has been installed.

The main festival that takes place is the „Marian Eucharistic Quincenario“, there are two great parties; the beginning on August 1 and the closing on August 15. Another important festival in the City is the celebration of the appearance of the image of the Lord of Mercy, which takes place starting on December 15 of each year with a great party called: „La Bajada“ in the Sanctuary and the Plaza principal (center).
