Water supply

The first centralised water distribution system in Moscow was launched on 28 October 1804, 25 years after Catherine II signed a corresponding executive order. The centralized water supply of the Moscow region is carried out mainly from surface water sources.

The supply of water for the capital region is provided by the Moskvoretsko-Vazuzskaya and Volzhskaya water systems, which include 15 reservoirs and water supply routes – the Moskva River with tributaries. The length of the water supply network as of 1 January 2020 is 13,145.3 km, including Water conduit, Street water supply network, Intra-quarter and intra-courtyard network.

Water supply and distribution systems include urban control units, which, in addition to pumps, also include drinking water reservoirs, which allow to smooth out the unevenness in water consumption by the city. There are 19 control units in Moscow; 23 pumping stations of the third lift due to different altitudes and remoteness from water treatment stations to ensure the required water pressure in the city and 518 pumping stations.
